I think, honestly, it comes with the choice of what they choose to emphasize through design, and lots of folks (I say that knowing full well that I have no hard data to back it up) are simply sick of “tough angry serious protagonist guy in a dark, brooding world” games.

Honestly, that’s how I’m playing through Witcher 3. I don’t care a bit about difficulty, except against the big hunts. I mostly just want to experience the story.
