I just tried this out after reading your post and omg it's amazing. I made short work of the spider matriarch using this along with destroying webs that she sits on. 

The thing about D&D is just because a spell is low level doesn’t mean it’s useless after a few levels.  This is something ARPG’s get wrong, and it frustrates me to see new players to Baldur’s Gate dismiss low level spells because they expect their potential to fall off rather quickly.
