The worst part is that I’m horrible at spelling but I know I got that word right.  Twice.

One of the primary reasons that the Democrats lost races they should have won, and lost seats in the House, was because of this specific slogan and how Republicans used it against Democrats.

The fact that you have to link an explainer article is proof that it’s a bad slogan that fails to communicate intent.

In other words, you never want to be in a position of majority or decision making in the United States. Got it. At least we’re clear on something, because “Defund the Police” is going exactly no where.

YES!  Come on, he’s totally right. I had to google it because I knew, obviously, it could not possibly mean - the alarming thought of ZERO DOLLARS FOR POLICE - but what do you think people think? Seriously, he’s right.

This is exactly it. Even I, a liberal who fully supports BLM, got a little nervous about the “Defund the Police” slogan until a friend took about 10 minutes to explain to me what it meant. If a slogan takes that long to explain, then it’s a bad slogan. If the opposition can take that slogan and repeat it completely

The worst part about this is that the Squad types can’t just take a minor L on this slogan and pivot to a more appealing message. This inherent “I’m right and no one can tell me otherwise” attitude from the Left is sinking all their goals, short- and long-term, and they are too stubbornly ignorant to admit that they

So, progressives shouldn’t advocate for progressive policy?

I’m glad to see a general consensus here that this slogan is horrible. Any of your suggestions would be a huge improvement. If the people calling for us todefund the police,” are to be taken literally, then I want nothing to do with that. I live a few blocks from the site of the homeless encampment that occupied a

So, to be clear, you fully support completely eliminating the police force with no replacement to act in a similar duty?

A slogan’s first, second, third and fourth job is to be catchy and uncomplicated. They don’t even have to convey a message so much as they do a good job of getting people to take notice of your movement. #defundthepolice does neither of those things.

Of course not. But gay marriage activists did a better job of getting their messaging across. Progressives can defend a lot of the same policies without using words they know trigger people’s paranoia, like ‘socialism’ does in the US. It’s basic PR, something progressives can’t seem to wrap their heads around, to

I am not personally un-graying baldheadedscallywag - but here is my response:

Because I support defunding the police, not fully abolishing the police, but many people when they hear “defund” they think “abolish”. What do you think the GOP means when they talk about defunding planned parenthood or ACA or whatever?

I’m all ears for how to read that otherwise

Not in the middle of the most important election in recent memory and with bad messaging and unpopular ideas that don’t even have the support of their political party, no. Not if the idea is to garner widespread support for your ideas, which is the only way you’ll ever be able to implement them.

they are spending several sentences every time trying to explain what the slogan actually meant. If you have to add three caveats, an explainer, and a small bit of backstory to explain a fucking slogan you have already lost the damned propaganda war.

Oh for fuck’s sake, stop it. Every. single. story includes this progressive passive-aggressive nonsense in the comments. No one is saying you shouldn’t advocate for the policies you want to advocate for. We’re just saying be smart about it, so you don’t alienate voters you need to win over in order to be in a position

Progressives shouldn’t use simply but grossly misleading packaging on a product. Let’s start with that.

So who is Obama’s lecture for?
