With registration costs like that I assume you are in CA. Its absurd for sure. I still pay over 200 a year for my Solstice which gets driven around 2500 miles a year. My Tesla was 618 to register this year. My old SS Sedan was at about 480/year before I sold it.

In my state there’s annual vehicle inspections that must be done prior to registration. They read the OBD, which has mileage. The DMV gets the inspection data electronically from the testing businesses already, so I’d think it would be a slam dunk for the DMV to calculate your mileage from the previous year and use…

micro management of vehicles to determine those registrations means way more tracking of vehicle and location data that people will probably not be comfortable with.

2nd Gear: I live in a state where a gas tax was passed, and then voters went to the polls and gutted it, and that isn’t unique. Nobody’s paying their fair share for the roads, and if we’re going to complain about EVs being tax dodgers, that also needs to be turned around.
