It’s amazing how often people proclaim that rapists are the “real” victims of the rapes they commit. Owen Labrie’s parents made essentially the same argument—the possibility of facing consequences for raping someone was so traumatizing for the poor lad that he shouldn’t actually have to face any consequences.

What some people never seem to understand is that being a charismatic, trustworthy, upstanding member of society is precisely the thing that allows guys like this to get away with what they do, because no one believes they could be capable of such horrors and they ignore all the signs of what’s going on.
