Framing, exposure, lighting, digital image quality, everything. I mean everything was ugly. It came off as a TV journeyman director with no sense of visual style trying to ape Roger Deakins and failing miserably, probably because that's exactly what it was.

I think the problem with Fargo was it was just so damn ugly compared to True Detective (not to mention the movie it was based on). The writing probably ended up being better, but it always looked and felt like a TV show.
