I’m sure you don’t care, but just FYI, I found Infinite Jest almost unbearably pretentious at first, stuck with it, and ended up loving it. I honestly think he did it on purpose too, for whatever reason; if you can get past the gate of nonsense, the actual book is pretty terrific.
The best thing about FW is the smug, pretentious comments about it by other people. Anthony Burgess saying it’s “one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page” is one of the most deliciously irritating quotes ever. That “us” gives me goosebumps.
