A good DM will help you get all your modifiers laid out on your sheet so that when they ask for a particular check you can easily see which number to add to your die roll. The whole meta-game is basically “roll 20, add 3 to it, DM decides if you succeeded” then you can continue making shit up. It’s so much fun once…

I agree with you that he was terrible but I was mostly admiring the things happening in the background of his scenes and have almost zero memory of any of his dialogue.
