Two points to bring up about this:

You and I will do that. I can force my kids to do that. That’s not really how things work with most kids and with a huge bulk of people outside the US (particularly Asia). They don’t want to spend time watching old stuff. They want the new and now.

I actually think JJ’s choice was good.  There were a ton of people (mostly kids) that needed a good intro.  I know lots of people complain, but it was a great intro to Star Wars for people who vaguely knew about the old movies.

I would have done a “Death of magic” story like Ursula Le Guin’s Furthest Shore.. Luke as old Ged travelling the galaxy to stop The Force from fading away. I would say the one unique characteristic of Star Wars is The Force. I’d lean on that. I’d buy you three more movies and be a good excuse to flesh out the universe…
