Technically, Currygewürzketchup has tomato paste or ketchup in it, but yeah, its pretty odd for American taste buds.

Poor Tim, he never did get that blue pony..

David Bowie hands down for the cool guy. Patti Smith for the cool woman. They provided a way to be extremely odd, edgy and yet effortlessly cool for being so.

The last job my mom held as a cook was at an elementary school in a economically challenged area of the county. There was many a time that she paid out of her own pocket for some kids lunch, or heaped a bit more on a tray for the child she knew that this was the only square meal they got that day.

Enough food to feed a small village.  So figure on the normal amount of food for a large group of people and then double it.  Its a cooking habit I also learned from my mom, because you “never know when there will be an extra guest or two”.  Which is why we never balked at asking to have someone over for dinner.  So

It’s was right up there with Pillsbury’s answer to Kool Aid.  There were originally two flavors called “Injun Orange” and “Chinese Cherry”.  And the artwork was just as insensitive as the names.

I went to school in Greenville, PA and many of my classmates were from the Pittsburgh area.  I still say the best Greek / Middle eastern food in the US comes from that area of the world.

Honestly, Harpers Bazaar missed the mark last year when it could have done the “Who wore it better? Monet-Xchange or Rhianna?

I hit that feature once. At Russian River. Yes, that is a 20 beer taster/flight board:

More Feisty lady.  She once took down a mugger in NYC’s Port Authority by smacking him repeatedly with her large purse until the transit cops came to the rescue.  She was a force of nature to be sure, and a supreme spoiler of her grandchildren.

This reminds me of an (in)famous story about my Uncle Phil and my German Nana.

You have never been inside a Perkins at 3:00 am in the morning. Iguanas at a Perkins do not surprise me in the least.

I really miss the German butcher shops and Jewish Delis back east. The CA Coast obviously was not attractive to German immigrants. :(

I have to agree.  It makes the best Palomas.

Why do we keep giving these people our time and attention?  Why?  And why must they insist on procreating?

My husband and I grew up outside of NYC. He was raised Catholic, me, Lutheran. We both have this abiding love of Matzoh with butter and other spreads that my two California kids find really strange. And which makes my Jewish friend’s Bubbe call us a bunch of crazy goyim because yeah, its a food of suffering.

Kate, you got me with the tuna fish. I love my tuna salad sandwich with a bit of relish and celery. It’s one of my comfort foods and one of the reasons I’m Pescatarian sometimes rather than full on vegetarian.

I have been to conferences and other events where as a vegetarian, the only option is salad.  After four days of eat salad 2 meals a day, it gets old really fast.  And yes, I’ve had the “here’s vegetable soup made with beef broth, you can have that!” type in-law as well.

The best tour was when Laguintas was just a small independent brewery and they weren’t trying to recreate the worst bro / frat party on earth.

When I was in my mid-twenties, I spent New Years in Pittsburgh with my college roommate and best friend at her parents house. We had plans to go out to a club, but a snowstorm hit and we ended up staying home and watching old Hollywood movies on the VCR. Her mom had made a batch of home made eggnog which we were
