I think we’re in agreement here. Most people aren’t basing these distinctions on anything other than prior association of the animal with food, which is kind of a shame.

Some fish can also survive out of water. Mudskippers can go a couple days. Essentially, gills just have an efficiency drop as they dry; if you can keep them wet enough, you can function for some time. Maybe not very well, the same way we can survive at high altitude for only so long, but it’s not instant suffocation.
