I think of it more as a comparison to the traveling freak shows of a century ago. Instead of physical freaks, though, we get social freak shows, from guests on Maury to Honey Boo Boo to this shit.

I fully understand why the couples would do it. I’m 27 and never had anything like a relationship; I’d jump at the chance for an arranged marriage if that was a thing in our culture, cause what I’m doing now’s definitely not working. But I think it’s cruel that they’re clearly fairly careless in making the pairings.

To be fair a lot of us weren’t alive for this Sean Penn thing. I didn’t know about it until I was an adult. And Chris Brown is a better analogue in that he didn’t just beat up any woman, he beat up America’s favorite starlet of their generation, and the cynic in me says that factors into the 0utrage.

The thing is, teenage rapists don’t even get charged as juveniles most of the time. They just don’t get charged.
