That’s what I love about Dowd. While I don’t always agree, I love how unabashedly seriously he takes criticism and find the high standards useful.

As far as Dan Stevens goes, have you seen the Guest? That’s one that somehow melted together paranoid John Carpenter 80s horror with an action revenge flick that’s fun (if not ultimately super substantial). And Stevens is magnificent in it!

I mean, in the first two there was two instances of weird time travel, alien languages, apple computer related plots, alt-futures, and such, all that were presented not as surreal or magical realist, but as as sci-fi elements to be explained which, in the first two volumes it didn’t.

For anyone who read this, did it ever explain anything? I got frustrated because two volumes in it kept introducing more mysteries without ever really even outlining what its story was.

This though seems to buy into the idea that films with silly concepts shouldn’t ever take themselves seriously (superheroes being an example of a deeply silly concept) which I disagree with thoroughly. It’s a flavor (darkness, grittiness, bombast, etc.), but a worthwhile one when handled correctly.

Me too! Looked great at that size.

I don’t feel like responding to all of that (not being snarky, I just don’t), but I’ll bite on the last point. The point of my original statement was simply that I like Nolan a lot and think he’s a lot better than the crowd around here would hold which I do think, from the tone, boils down largely to contrarianism. I

The interesting thing though is that the counter fanbase is as vocal as the fanbase. He’s definitely been championed by teenagers without much taste. He’s also been vilified by film nerds who’ve decided he’s a hack. My complaint is that to have an opinion on him, you automatically have to place yourself in opposition

If you haven’t seen it, watch Dunkirk. Bonafide masterpiece.

I like Chris Nolan’s movies. I’m not a fanboy (a few of them have been poor), but I’m also not a film snob who has to claim how much dumber they are than anyone thinks. I hate how, because he’s popular and people like his stuff, it becomes a mark of pride to like or dislike him. It’s like you have to believe he’s

I like it a lot. I think it gets a little confusing in the last couple of volumes and the movie actually does a good job of excising some of the bloat (the evil ex fights get weird way too fast in the books). But emotionally I think it has more clarity and heft than the films.

This is my thought. Entitled white ladies exist (I worked customer service for years, it’s not news to me), but why demean a bunch of people who had nothing to do with it. Should we also make fun of all people named Donald?

That’s fair. I was called a ‘cuck’ on reddit yesterday because I said I’d rather be single than flirt with girls in a way that put people in danger of spreading covid.

Can I add ‘Karen’ to that list?

My vote still goes for them posting the twitter thread of people making fun of the girl who couldn’t figure out which side of her car the gas cap was on. That still pisses me off.

I actually chose to skip that one which I feel proud of. I wish I could say the same here.

But it’s not just about how he treats the people around him poorly, it’s about how she does the same thing. In the end they’ve finally removed their baggage and have a shot at choosing eachother. I actually think it avoids treating the women like prizes precisely because it makes the point that Scott can only get the

I like the nods to Canada in general (I’m sure I miss most though). My favorite being that during the fight with the twins, the Sex B-Bombs digital monster mascot thing is a sasquatch.

Scott is an unlikeable Douche but I feel like that’s the point. He’s also faintly sympathetic because he’s the sort of slacker guy in his 20s douche that a lot of us have either been or known. I don’t know, I cut the film more slack likely do to its visual panache.

In the movie? Yes. In real life there are very few people who I’d choose over MEW (Emma Stone and Cristin Milioti maybe).
