I think mutants (x-men etc) probably work the best as a setting. There's a rough explanation for why similarly powered people are on both hero and villain sides with a diverse set of abilities (something's causing mutations to increase and be awesome — yes, it's nonsense fantasy, but it's just one thing to accept).

I read through a biography of Seward (William Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man) and a book dissecting the Gettysburg address (Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words that Reshaped America). The first one, I really recommended. The second was perfectly decent, but suffered in comparison.
