Yeah it’s pretty useless. One would be better off storing all available data onto a massive data storage network, ship it to Mars on a satellite for local access, and then send the ship back to earth to refresh it all and keep doing that over and over.

But you think, like he does, that it’s anywhere near theoretically possible through wireless communication and hundreds/thousands of satellites??

Stainless covered by whatever = oxygen starvation = “crevice” corrosion.

Anode you were being serious...iron gunna argue with yer facts.

Nope, I see zero reason to have the slightest sympathy for anyone so dumb as to buy one of these turds.

Metallurgists call it corrosion resistant steel, not stainless, which was more of a trade name for high chromium steel.

Your CEO is an idiot. When I was young and stupid, I also thought these guys were thinking at a level I couldn’t comprehend. As I got older and wiser, I realized that they were just very stupid people.

Where I work, everyone got pay cut due to the tariffs. It was later restored with the CEO basically telling everyone that they were able to offer “raises” that year. It just got us back to where we were 3 years prior.

IIRC the slowest achieved was through a strontium Bose-Einstein Condensate (an ultracold cloud of atoms that behaves very strangely to our macroscopic sensibilities) and was, like, 20 metres per second? (~40 Freedoms/Eagle)

That would be typical Musk exaggeration and bullshit. You know, like “full self driving” or “I can cut $2T from the government without sinking the country” or “how could I be a racist piece of shit? I’m from South Africa.”

Yeah, I’d love to see a diagram describing the orbital mechanics of such a scenario. I’m not saying it’s not possible, but it’s not remotely feasible. Maybe quantum mechanics will provide a means to make something like that work, but it won’t be created by Musk.

Right now, Mars. On average, always Mercury.

Yes, it’s a bull idea, and he’s conman...but that doesn’t mean this article isn’t conflating network throughput and latency in a way that makes its mocking tone worthy of being derided itself. Imagine showing this to one of his supporters, and having them realize the mistake the writer made—congrats, you’ve pushed

Lasers communicate slower than the speed of light (in a vacuum) when passing through air. The speed of light, whilst a constant, changes drastically depending on the refractive index of the medium through which it is passing.

“On Average”

I believe you’re confusing bandwidth with latency.

The tweet that Elon replied to specifically says “This network could serve Mars missions, allowing real-time images and data streams from Mars to Earth”

Real-time is clearly not possible and maybe Elon just missed that (or maybe he’s fine with people thinking it’s true).

Mars does not move in the same orbit around the sun, or at the same speed as Earth.

Elon is reminding me of Henry Ford. When I first learned about Henry, he was an amazing innovator who created the assembly line and paid his working a high wage. Way to go Henry! Then I found out he thought the Nazis were on the right track with fascism. And that he published and distributed worldwide an astonishingly

That seems to be part of the idea. The other part amounts to basically “throw a few signal boosters between here and there”, or, you know.. bullshit.
