I really don't think its the fabric softener, just the overall nature of a sock, to be compressed on your feet by your shoes, they naturally flatten and get stale.

Buckeye fan here, my favorite thing to complain about is the relatively low lifecycle of a new pair of socks. I mean really, after about 3-4 washes they're no where near all fluffy and soft and can't be worn anymore. I just find it terrible.

Sunflower seeds, a few of my friends who went into the minors quit because obviously they can't chew there, so they went through tubs of sunflower seeds, It helps with the "ritual" of spitting, helps break the habit or so i'm told.

Pretty similar to how I quit smoking. Finished the last cigarette out of a pack & stood there thinking "yeah I'm done". Went cold turkey after a 3 pack/week habit for 7-8 years. I thought it was pretty easy, just don't buy any, then you don't have any to smoke.
