I was just sayin...

I’ve said this before, but my disdain for Franzen became burning hatred when he wrote that NEw Yorker article about how Edith Wharton would have been a better writer if more men had wanted to fuck her. I still can’t believe more people didn’t call him out for that. Edith Wharton is 1000x the writer he will ever be.

When I think of “new black” I think of Marcus Garvey and the Harlem Renaissance. W.E.B. DuBois and his book, “The Souls of Black Folk” back in 1903 which helped define The New Negro movement. Rap stars with middle class Moms and entertainers that churn out mind numbing hits don’t come to mind at all.

u ever see this? even danny brown retweeted it:

When I got to the “dark chocolate” bit I involuntarily shouted my safe word and scared my sleeping cat so badly, he scurried off the bed.

Randy Newman absolutely must do the theme song.

America is a strange place. We have an incredibly wide wealth gap. Paired with that we have decades of systemic institutional racism. As a result, we have a lot of poor people who are also PoC, and getting out of the cycle of poverty is especially difficult for PoC due to systemic racism and prejudices. Most places

Unfortunately it’s not just wealthy black people. You have a lot of self hate in black community. Our parents most of them raised us under the white gaze and ultimately thought us consciously or not to act for the white gaze. So there’s a lot of respectability politics going on in our community. That’s one of the

Seriously, half the people that are like: “Hey, my money protects me from racism, or my education protects me from racism,” they all sound like this to me:

SlutPanic said upthread that he was promoting the Race Together campaign or whatever, so that provides a little context to what he is saying. i agree, i’m sure there is more nuance in there

The new black narrative is attractive to wealthy Black people and poor black people because it disregards the structural, systematic forces that shape our lives and gives us practical, personal ways to cope with them. In that way it is very much like a self help book- just another aspect of the American dream.

Chris Rock’s documentation of his being stopped by the police for driving while black seems like a pretty strong argument against some part of the “New Black” idea.

Agreed.

I just need you to know that your handle is everything

Is that a picture of the cake? Where are the parts that I eat? I’m supposed to be satisfied by a tiny golden sliver? Fuck this cake.

HOT BEER TAKE BEER GUY. Fruit has been used in the brewing of beer since people starting making beer. So while normally, I’m totally cool with the differences in one’s palette in the world, I do enjoy critiquing snobs who clearly don’t know what the fuck they are talking about enough to be snobby about it.

I had this about a month ago and my palette was confused. It had all the makings of a sour except for the “sour” part. Most fruit beers I’ve had have either been blondes/stouts/wheats with some fruit, or actual sours. This was...different. And quite enjoyable. That sweetness really hits you up-front, but I agree that

Pipeworks is hit or miss, as they pump out about a zillion new variations a year. But, damned if I didn’t love their G&T, which is (duh) gin and tonic inspired.

Founders has soooo many awesome beers.....but you’re writing about literally the worst one.

Sidenote: I just discovered Pipeworks Brewing in Chicago. MUST MUST MUST try.
