I agree with most of your post but the part about servers are wrong. Servers cost. They are not “free in the grand scheme”. How much they cost depends a lot on the game and how much calculations that need to be done per player on the server. WoW and Hearthstone probably don’t cost that much, Overwatch probably a lot…
All AAA games made today plan their DLC before release. Making AAA content takes months and has to be planned way before the release of a game.
