I know this is your personal crusade and all, but across multiple countries, the data is pretty clear- most of the time in a pedestrian or cyclist vs car incident, it’s the fault of the driver, not the pedestrian, not of the cyclist.

The fact that we have to create (as you point out) entire separate, separated lanes

Wait a minute, you wanna spend 50-125k on what is essentially a bad weather beater and the car you drive in to work? Just do what everyone else does and get a subaru, then save the money you were going to spend on the car on ski trips.

I get that it can be enjoyable. But the environment would disagree with you. There’s no water there and yet... golf courses by the thousands. My favorite is when you hear desert state governors saying that the great lakes states are going to have to give them water. No, y’all need to move where the water is.

Also a crazy idea that turns out to be true? Building cities in the middle of a desert is a terrible idea. Dumping 10 million people into an area designed to support closer to zero human beings is dumb as hell.

The place: Wisconsin. The time of year, Winter. We got an enormous dump of snow. Like a foot or more, which has become increasingly rare. I woke up, Shoveled my driveway and then heroically did not go out and drive to the store for any reason at all.

Thanks to campaign reform, national parties are now largely powerless to stop idiots. Thus, you have Marjorie Taylor Green being the top republican fundraiser and the GOP having zero ways of saying, “we are not letting Donald Trump run as a republican based on his historical record” in 2016.

It’s the dirty little

As a person who has done multiple week long trips in the wilderness, taking down and setting up a tent is really, really not hard. At all. Modern tents, modern camping gear is all super easy to set up and disassemble and pack away.

I want the option. I’m OK with living dangerously and occasionally having to use paper maps.

Can I offer a counter proposal that it be possible in 2024 to buy a car with nothing but a bluetooth receiver, amplifier and decent speakers with a mag safe iphone mount on the dash where the screen would go?

He literally said bikes on the trailer hitch, so, yeah.

My experience is if you can keep it on the car, it’s a lot easier than dealing with a trailer, especially if you are putting in in wilder areas that don’t have trailer parking or paved roads and all that. And if you have standard roof rails, you can easily stack

Outbacks would be great if they didn’t have the stupid rack built in- there’s not a lot of spread for 2 boats. If they just sold the outback with the same standard roof rails as the Forrester, Crosstrek or Ascent, it’d be awesome but, well, no.

Trailers are a total PITA for small boats AND they remove the option of hitch mounted bike racks.

Confusion only works if you’re paying attention.

I love the fact that 20 years ago, Monona actively discouraged cyclists from riding through their community and are only now realizing that, hey, those folks on 3k bikes probably have money... Meanwhile fitchburg was like “count us in”...

You are missing the point here- in your scenario, you had to deal with a startled pedestrian who got mad and caused you to brake harder than you would have liked. And that’s it. No one died. Because you were being a responsible driver and knew that you were in a very congested/confused traffic area. So you got

OK, so some thoughts- a lot of what you are saying seems based on the idea that collisions are accidents, not incidents. Accident implies... accidental. “it just happened.” or “they came out of nowhere.” As opposed to, you hit a pedestrian/cyclist/other car because you were not fully in control of your 4000lb metal

Drivers: argle bargle I saw a bike that wasn’t paying attention once so now I think they all deserve to die And why can’t I park on sidewalks argle bargle.

There’s a really, really simple technique for drivers that stops you from dooring anyone, from cyclists to other cars called the Dutch Reach- Instead of opening the door with your left hand (for cars with left hand drive), you reach across your body and open with your right hand, forcing you to look over your shoulder.

OK, now this is crazy but, instead of getting people to learn a whole bunch of proprietary signals, maybe instead make a light that flashes inside the car, for the driver to let them know that something is coming. Like a blindspot monitor or something.

UGH. One of the communities near me did a similar thing where they had sidewalks that would alternate between bike path + curb and then 50 foot section of sidewalk on both sides of the road to “calm traffic.” The sidewalk would be in the same place as the bike path was for the last couple hundred yards. And since, as
