If I was wealthy I would open a 3D print repair shop just to keep me busy and challenged. People could bring in their broken bits and bobs and I would have fun recreating them for a nominal fee.

“If it happened, think how much movie producers would love it...an unending supply of Chargers that could be destroyed in as many chases as they could stage.”
Jensen Interceptors. Replacing those backlights after a shootout with international assassins is freaking expensive!!!
We have the technical capability to scan and digitize stuff and the price of doing that is dropping. It would not be a bad idea to start digital scanning old cars for future purposes. If we want to use and preserve old cars in the future good scanning would help.
Mazda 323 GTX. Transmissions were made of glass and they’re nearly unobtainable these days.
This. There’s actually so many of these on the road, there would be a pretty big market for parts. I’d add MB W123 to the list for similar reasons. Any model with a large and long run would make sense. Dashboards would probably sell like hotcakes, given how many cracked ones I see.
Going with what 4jim noted, we’re talking about out of production parts. So you would either need to find a used part or NOS instead. Any automaker could scan their original blue prints to make the file or anyone with original parts could also 3D scan them to generate the file.
Because they don’t exist is EXACTLY why they need a parts reproduction program. If one existed, I’d probably be driving a SAAB right now.
There would be a market for having places that could 3d print or cnc machine parts for all kinds of old cars and trucks on demand. Imagine running to a shop (or overnight mail) and asking for a certain part for a certain old car. tail light bracket, knob or whatever and it gets machined or 3d printed for you right…
The ‘69 Charger:
Cadillac XLR. I know, not really reasonably priced or even all that great. But it would be scary to own one knowing that burning out a tail light could pretty much total the car.
As a P1 Volvo guy, I always feel bad for my 240/740 buddies as they have tons of trouble finding trim and other (primarily) cosmetic parts. This is due to the fact that with their reliability, finding them in junk yards is hard and there isn’t the tuning/customization scene for them like there are for the 850s and…
AW11 MR2 is clearly and indisputably the correct answer. Particularly the seals on the targa panels...
Fiero...or gen 1 mr2
I know they don’t exist anymore but SAABs, especially the 900.
Given the increasing interest, the old Ur Quattro/UrS models from Audi could sure use a little support here in the US. Audi has Audi Traditions, which services pretty much everywhere except the US, so the parts, the production capabilities, and the goodwill exist, but the drawbridge is, for some reason, still locked…
Depends on the person looking for the car.
Seriously, it’s not the 60's when basically each year was a facelift.
If you’re ordering a car in these times, don’t get impatient and just wait. Stressing out over an issue someone is taking care of won’t do you any good anyway.
