I wonder if the original, more acidic, unpalatable version behaved more like petroleum lubricants.

Yesterday I found out about a fish called “Orange Rouguy”, and that it was originally named “slime head”.

Greetings, fellow alum!

I suspect that the rebranding was simply clever marketing aimed at removing an unpleasant association with the existing name of the product. A similar wildly successful rebranding was to rename Patagonian Toothfish to Chilean Sea Bass. Same fish, but now it sounds pretty on the menu.

This is mere lubrication — consider that Rudolf Diesel intended his invention to use vegetable oil as fuel.

I think some popcorn oils are mixed with palm, but many of the gallon variety just look red due to the volume and the off-white jug. They mostly (can’t say all because I haven’t seen all) pour yellow.

You left out they also put the extracted oil through an intense purification process that improves the color, taste and odor.

I’m an engineer at a canola oil crush+refine plant who regularly slacks off by reading jalopnik so this was a weird crossover lol

Didn’t a lot of Bernie bros end up Trump voters?

extracted from the rapeseed plant

scientists from the University of Manitoba used B. napus and B. rapa to develop the strain, which was premiered in the 1970s

Interesting. Most of the red ones seems to be canola popping oil, for popcorn. Maybe those have a palm blend. I did see one brand (Snappy) that says it’s colored with beta carotene, but that doesn’t scream red to me.

I’ve never seen a red pure canola oil. I’ve seen some that look reddish in the container, but that has to do with the size, the container, and light refraction. When those pour, they pour yellow.

It’s great for lubrication of external, cool, metal on metal contact. It’s hell for internal, warm or hot, metal on metal contact. That lovely “seasoning” you get on pans kicks in fast, and sets a hard crust everywhere. Cleaning it is a nightmare, and it gums things like musical instrument valves in a matter of days

There was another article I remember reading but it explained how fringe health stuff was targeted by Qanon types because they’re naturally more gullible or believe bullshit more easily.

It’s been pretty remarkable watching it happen. And a LOT has happened since 2020 when that article was written. I grew up in Woodstock, NY - mecha of hippy nonsense. It has been fascinating watching anti-vaxxers who were horrified when Trump was elected aligning themselves with a surprising amount of far-far right

Makes you wonder why Diddy didn’t buy it instead of baby oil...

Why are some canola oils red? The Internet only seems to have “theories.”

heard about this from an engineer friend last month. that’s all we used in the 90s to cook our food.
