Dude I think the thing that gets most POC is that if feels like the white person thought we were making it up this whole time.

This. Totally. I hate hate hate it, but I depend on my boyfriend since I make under the poverty line and also have a huge debt. I know if anything were to happen to our relationship I’d be pretty screwed. It makes me feel uncomfortable ALL the time.

yeah, my reaction reading this was “no, what we need is a fuck-off fund for everyone. it’s called a social safety net.”

Same with those who say the poor have no money management skills. Poor people have crazy good money management skills, they just aren’t the same skills that middle class, upper-middle class and rich people need.

One of the things I learned early on is to buy jewelry in case you need to sell it one day. It’s a common immigrant tactic for staying afloat and keeping money on you when you need to run quickly that I don’t think westerners quite understand. So whenever I see people complaining about people on welfare wearing lots

They sound exactly like the women who are my coworkers at my part time job. All of them work two jobs but, because of the inflated cost of living where we are, would never be able to make rent if they weren’t sharing their homes with family. When you’re in that situation you just have to hope that your family is kind

So so true.

Thank you. I’m glad it was mentioned in the article because many like this just don’t even address it but I’ve never had enough to have savings. It made absolutely no difference that I have my own bank account once I was married because he made much more than me and it just made it hard for him to imagine how big the

Yes, I really appreciate the lack of presumption that anyone who doesn’t do this isstupid, has no foresight, and lacks self-control. Many people live paycheck to paycheck because they have no choice - not because they’re poor planners.

When I was single-parenting (and getting only sporadic support from the Exhole), I had to get a childcare subsidy in order to keep my job. I couldn’t keep it and pay the full price of daycare and eat. And I was already getting a discounted rate because my daughter was in a daycare that I’d taught at for 5 years and

Thank you for acknowledging your great good fortune. Too many who are blessed, as I was and you are, don’t even see those people across the checkout line, or waiting tables, or even fighting our fires or protecting our towns.

Thank you! I understand the sentiment but in reality many people literally are living paycheck to paycheck.

It is profoundly expensive to be poor in this country. And car repairs, insurance, tickets are always some of the biggest money pits. We need our cars to get to work. Those of us below the poverty line don’t get paid if we can’t get to work; if we don’t come to work our jobs go to those who can. I hope your husband

The fact that people like you, who contribute SO MUCH to society are forced to live on the poverty line is a goddam crime. American values are so fucked up. I know it helps not a bit, but THANK YOU for what you do.

haha right, like imagine what would have happened if these women went to their company or the police with a complaint that read “He grabbed my ass and made repeated, unwarranted advances at me” or “he tried to force me to give him a blow job but couldn’t get it up so he gave up and left.” I’m suuuuuuuuuure they would

I also live below the poverty line and a fuck off fund is/would be a luxury. What I would love is some financial institution or insurer to start catering to this market and maybe do a community emergency fund that collects interests to help pay emergency bills(ie car repairs, emergency dental/medical..etc).

and that people who are doing important hard work (like you) aren’t on the brink of needing help yourself constantly.

easier said and all that...

I was one of these women. I talked to Beth and Judy last night. It was fairly recent. I was hard to talk about.

They are pretty entrenched in the Democratic party establishment. That’s not really inaccurate or controversial.
