I've done several HPDEs and autocrosses in my 135? The 1/2 series buying pool seems to be pretty evenly split between women looking for something cute (re: 128/228 and an auto) and dudes looking for a reasonably powerful, reasonably light RWD car. I don't find the attribution weird at all.
