I got to meet him at Supercar Sunday this last week. He was awesome, cracking jokes, talking cars, taking pictures with everyone, signing all autographs, looking at people's project binders and showing off his P1. He's awesome and obviously the coolest celebrity car collector.

I think the specific number comes from the kilogram to lb conversion that Maté has to do for us Americans. What he is saying in metric is the car is well under 1200kg which is a nice round and less specific number.
