After reading *all* of the front page of this article I *still* went to the link and boy, was everyone else right. Should not have.

His accent kind of kills it for me. If you watch older movies, the accents of the 1920's and 30's were different from today, so hearing his modern pronunciation is weird.

Not common, no. It was definitely a little more socially acceptable but still kind of creepy; at that time 16 was the age most girls got hitched at.
