I just bought "Stalking the Wild Asparagus" a few months ago and have to say, as far as wild edible plants go, it's a *fantastic* read. The author is funny throughout and the information has all been field-tested either by him and his wife or by people he knows immediately.

Maybe the costume thing is like with the ice skaters, where they're not *really* exposing all that skin, it's just flesh-toned fabric to make them *look* half-naked.
