I find the cheap squishy foam earplugs are much more comfortable than the multi-baffle rubber/plastic ones, as they conform to your ear canal versus requiring you to locate the correct size.

It seems to make the person eat differently... it was so strange getting a close-up of her eating. A couple times it looked like she put the food in her mouth and took it back out again.

Oh, most definitely. It's actually the second book I've read with backups of the mind causing interesting problems for murder... the first one had gender-bending clone sex, too, but I forget the title.
The tape recorder seems to be a reference to Nixon's tendency to record all his conversations, which eventually brought him low... an excellent way to show that this particular conversation wasn't recorded and so could never come to light in the ensuing investigations.
