In our case, our kid moved too much to be in the bassinet in our room.  She woke herself up because she got so big so quick.  So we moved her to the crib.  Best decision ever.

So about the early bird option: having the option isn’t the only thing required. You need to buy the early bird option early (with your ticket usually). Because if you wait to buy it a week before, all the early earlybirders beat you to the bunch. Learned this the hard way and got B1 on a flight.

So I paid the $100 upgrade on Delta for 1st class on my flight from MSP to BWI. Sure it was more leg room, but I honestly get almost the same on Jetblue without 1st class. The extra perks like priority boarding and more attention for drinks/snacks was nice. But I was genuinly surprised that the leg room wasn’t more…
