The 5th gens just seem to go out of their way to look MEAN and TOUGH and I AM A BIG TRUCK. The 4th gens are downright pretty and non-aggressive. Only reasons I have a 5th gen is bc I found it with all the mods I wanted, it has TC/SC deactivation and a slightly bigger 3rd row than the 4th gens.
4runners make slightly more sense if you consider the slow depreciation they have earned. I have owned three. They are not for everyone but thats why I like them among other reasons:

The USA is, yet again, trailing behind Europe in terms of progress.
I also used to wish for more of a rail infrastructure in the USA. However, I stopped criticizing its shortcomings when I thought about the US versus Japan/Europe in terms of population density.
I disagree. These are fun to watch because they have low grip, forgiving handling tendencies, high sidewall, high center of gravity and long suspension travel with lots of RWD power. Making them more of a proper race car/truck will just remove these benefits.
