I appreciate this review. I read Hartley’s recent Harper’s piece (that is excerpted from her book and acting as an ad for it) and was pretty unimpressed with how unthoroughly it seems she has grappled with issues of gender, socialization, labour, and feminist theory as a whole.

It’s not just the bureaucratic hoops that aren’t mentioned, it’s the fact that these things aren’t “free”--they are the grounds upon which treaties were made that allowed White Canadians to get rich off of Indigenous land.
My mom’s best friend did this for the last three or so years of their youngest’s high school years. Literally no painting that has ever existed deserves a $90 million price tag. It’s absurd and obscene and ceased to be about the merits of the art and artist long ago and is, instead, like housing, treated as a commodity for the disgustingly wealthy.
