But how does that rhyme with his original statement I was responding to? Again, wouldn't 5% of characters being gay (or more broadly, LGBTQ) still mean that *almost* all the characters are straight/non-trans/etc.?

That's true!
Sure, but since this article is about LGBTQ representation (the B stands for 'Bi', I believe, and not 'Black') that seems entirely beside the point.
I'm not sure that is entirely true: an equality of opportunity does not automatically lead to an statistically perfectly equal outcome. Furthermore, hasn't Hollywood historically always been ahead of the curve in terms of offering opportunities to gay people?
Lol, yes they are. You should travel/read more.
I believe in equality, and that means everybody can play pretty much everything and I'll reserve judgment until I see it. I'm fine with Linda Hunt playing a Chinese man in the Year of Living Dangerously or Joseph Fiennes playing Michael Jackson in Urban Myths or Chiwetel Ejiofor playing James Bond (hey, I can dream)…
The quality of representation is an entirely separate (and much more subjective) discussion.
All your comments boil down to "gay actors should get to play both straight and gay roles, but only gay actors should be allowed to play gay roles" - how is that logical or fair? Acting =/= being.
Again, more than 80% of Americans *are* straight, so I don't see why "Someone watching American films would probably guess that 80% of Americans are straight" is problematic.
Sadly, most countries are more homophobic than the US.
But even if we generously assume that 5% of the total population are LGBTQ, it could be argued that 'almost' everybody *is* straight. Hell, you could double that number to 1 in 10 and 'almost' everybody would still be straight.
Yeah, that interview with Evil Cooper was a thing of beauty - MacLachlan playing Evil!Coop pretending to be the real Cooper was such a bravura performance, and further underlined what a truly monstrous, terrifying being this Bob/Coop hybrid is.
There is a nightmare-like quality to the special effects that really makes them work much better in this context than polished contemporary CGI, I think.
Thanks for the heads-up, JERK.
Miguel Ferrer GONE 2 SOON appreciation thread.
Between her and Madeline Zima slowly undressing in the first episode, this show is surprisingly sensual.
I still can't believe Matthew Lillard has turned into a likeable character actor who pretty much always delivers, including this episode of Twin Peaks.
Smash-cut to a grumpy-looking bald guy in a wife-beater playing solitaire in a supply closet at Schiphol airport.
"Heb je ooit een volwassen man naakt gezien?"
First thing I thought about when reading this review. That was a pretty great movie, and this sounds like somewhat of a retread of similar themes to diminished results.
