Interesting that you should mention them being cost prohibitive, because Michigan State University is building a 10 MW set of arrays across multiple parking lots (expected annual output 15000 MW*h, for a 24 hr/365.25 day average of 1.7 MW in cloudy mid-Michigan). It will provide about 5% of campus annual energy needs.
