They won’t learn. The writers think they’re killing it, hence the pop music.

But June is explicitly not a hero. Everything she has done has been in service to her survival. She does not sacrifice. She is the vessel for everyone else. Emily, Rita, Nick, even Janine early on were the conveyors of resistance. Janine is the Charlie Brown or the Pooh, witness and observer of the world around her;…
At this point, Godzilla suddenly appearing over Boston would make about as much sense.
Also Emily. Don’t forget she murdered a few people. Janine mouths off and loses an eye.
From Roger Ebert’s review of the 1990 movie:
Sounds like horseshit, Breanna (love the name, by the way). Try again. Try something more plausible. Try something that might make some bit of sense.
I have to call just a little bit of bullshit here. Too many of these discussions revolve around motherhood, and a mother’s love and/or bond with a child. The Handmaid’s Tale is not about these themes. This is the forced impregnation of women, by means of rape thus creating what is truly a culture of rape. These would…
“Did you forget your lunch today?”
Absolutely! I remember those days. Dawson’s Wrap and Mighty Big TV. If I remember correctly, Uncle Bob was one of my favorites. His re-caps of The Surreal Life were absolute gold. Demian too. This was before they got co-opted by Bravo? I guess, back then, before the days of binge-watching, the best way to catch up on…
YouTube has bizarre terms and conditions under which it will permit certain content. My little re-cap was written for the benefit of people expecting re-caps instead of sunny editorializing, blatant ass-kissing, and politics. Zack Handlen writes actual re-caps and frankly, I wish he were writing up these episodes. …
Honesty in the season finale; honest discussion and argument between June and Rita and then June and Serena. “We tried to put her on the path to God.” Interesting. Eden’s father is ashamed and apologetic for Eden’s conduct. “You have another daughter,” Fred asks. Her own parents turned her in. Uh-oh, June. The…
What is a man’s world? That sounds more like a psychological construct than a sociological construct, or something based in the differences between men and women; differences that cannot be considered ideological because, in my view, men and women do not have differing ideologies based on their gender. America is far…
Every week it looks like June might finally escape, but then every week the bars slam closed again.
They did have most of the season written when they thought the season was only going to last 10 episodes. The additional order for three more episodes. My theory was that they intended to end the season with June stuck in the house. Their plans went to Hell and they had to scramble to write new material.
To me, her death was meaningless because her character was meaningless. She was created and shoe-horned into an episode to set up the “child-bride” theme in Nick’s subplot. This should have served the dual purpose of reinforcing Nick’s love for June (which is also meaningless) in his somewhat cruel indifference to her…
“You must never be afraid to go there.”
At least (from what I understand) T-Dawg made appearances on the show. Odette is more like the Nicki and Paolo bit from Lost or Jonathan suddenly becoming the star of Buffy.
They didn’t expect to Fred to be anything more than a monster; something along the lines of the bull from Rose Madder, just a treacherous diversion and nothing more. I think Fiennes could do more if he was given more to do.
This is how I want it go down:
Indeed. I don’t see how everybody can laud June for being such a “strong female character.” She’s not strong. She’s vulnerable, needy. She’s not particularly bright. Her purple prose comes across like a 15-year-old’s self-mutilation journal. She has no sense of smell for the incredible opportunities that are…
