Let’s say that we each of us maybe extend a certain allotment of “good will points” to our favorite artists. If they keep delivering great stuff, then they get more points. It’s totally punk rock to complain about not playing "big venues". On another note, that joke might've worked if he hadn't added that lame kicker.
