Ah, I see. I forget other countries are complete asshole to their workers. I find tips offensive, too. I would MUCH rather pay a standard service charge than tip. However, that practice is extremely rare here. -_-

Servers in America are only paid a pittance, not even minimum wage. (For instance, they might make $2.83 instead of $7.25.) The tips are meant to supplement their earnings. If you have a problem paying a tip, complain to the restaurant owner, don't take it out on the servers.
