I think pointing out that she was 17 does matter - not because of AoC or potential legal repercussions, but because developmentally she’s just not on the same level as someone in their mid-twenties or older. No matter what the law says, he still very much groped a child.

My reaction is grooming to exploit. I don’t find anything charming about it. Being BFFS at his age with a girl hers is weird as fuck, and makes no sense, unless he’s deliberately using his advantages to groom.

When I was in my early 20s, I was sometimes hired to attend rock/pop/jazz/etc. concerts with high schoolers. The children wanted to go to concerts; the parents wanted to say yes to the children, didn’t want to go themselves, but didn’t want them to go unchaperoned; so, they hired me.
