I also think people have grown used to carrying around a $1000 piece of consumer tech in their pocket and they’re just growing a bit careless. It doesn’t help that the manufacturers (Apple or otherwise) continue to tout enhancements to device durability.

Big deception? Please. If the thought of a computer this expensive offends you, you’re clearly not the intended user or demographic. Get a mac mini and a (non apple) monitor. Or dock a laptop. Plenty of recent monitors have integrated usb-c power and hubs.
