I’m pretty comfortable thinking of the book and the movie as entirely separate stories that take place in a loosely-shared universe, to be honest. I liked them both, thought they both fell a little short, but don’t think they’re really closely linked at all.

What the fuck are you talking about? Every person in this movie is over 30 years old, it’s not a dystopian movie, there aren’t really any heroes in it, etc., etc. It’s very, very clearly an adult science fiction movie that’s complicated, and weird, and fairly cerebral.
