Never Trump conservatives like Stephens, George Will, and Jennifer Rubin are pulling a nice little bait-and-switch on their audience. For a lot of 2015 and 2016, they spilled a lot of ink explaining that Trump didn’t represent True Conservatism and attempted to convince themselves, first that Republican voters would

tl;dr “We think...” is not third person phrasing.

Yeah but how often do those better contexts only reach people who already know who he is?

“some V.A. type nightmare”

Nah man. As someone who thinks and works a lot on racial justice from a progressive, AfAm perspective, Till’s inclusion here is not a bad thing AT ALL. If we can disrupt a “lighthearted” moment and get people to Google a kid they never heard of and learn about racial terror...that is a GOOD thing. You’re reaching here

“It’s dignity, Luanne!!! DIGNITY!”

What annoys me the most about this column - and the works of Stephens and David Brooks in particular - is their insistence on couching their bullshit purely as impartial advice for Democrats. It’s always “the party will lose elections if they don’t say/do this thing that I believe in” instead of “the party should say/

Personally, I’m in favor of anything that makes people remember Emmett Till.

This is always an Escher-like mind breaking paradox for me. Every study, every statistic shows the police as a whole to be biased and racist. Yet no individual act is ever motivated by racism or bias. The human mind should not be able to hold both of these suppositions to be true without it inducing H.P. Lovecraftian

Serious biz...

So they made a number of suggestions to improve the quality of recruit that would want to be an officer? Oh good so we know that they will ignore all of them and continue to look for the guys that were bullies and bullied in high school and have no social skills at all.

I wish this was more widely known. Like, the actual appellate decision that created the precedent is pretty straightforward about needing to have intellectual control over its cops.

When communities send people to be cops, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good

I bet they’d consider it evidence of bias from the general public if we called one of the bastards a bastard. I’m not biased against cops, just the bastards.

You said an absolute word. In so many people eyes a childhood is for white children only. Us folks of color aren’t deserving of the protection, care and innocence that they deny us and actively steal from us. In their perspective our children are no better than the adults and in their minds the adults are no better

Because they shop for religion the same way people shop for a meal.. They find one that is most palatable to them (i.e.: conforms to/validates their notions/beliefs/expectations) and cheapest (i.e.: easiest to adhere to). Not which is the most nutritionally sound (i.e.: teaching the truth) or any other factor.

My wife and I didn’t need to watch Chernobyl because she has white spots from the “black rain” all over her arms. Also, 11 days prior to the incident, she and her mother moved out of an apartment that was right on the edge of the exclusion zone.

The great flaw of Reconstruction was that the Union failed to deport the entire planter class to Alaska, and hang every Confederate officer above the rank of captain.

This exactly. This is unfortunately an old argument, and as much I wish everyone would just acknowledge US concentration camps, I’m not at all surprised at the denial.

America has always called our concentration camps “internment camps” pretending they’re something different because they weren’t run by Nazi Germany,

This is what I was into when I was 12.
