Some people want a nicer car than a GR86. As everyone is quick to point out, the new Supra just isn’t a successor to the old one, so any discussion of authenticity is already out the window.
This is the truth. I love the look of the Supra. I like that it’s a more premium car and will likely have better interior quality and NVH. On paper it’s down a few HP, but we know area under the curve is where those BMW engines shine, and it’s damn fast.
It’s sad and pathetic the most “premium” looks by far the worst of the three.
The Z doesn’t look like an aborted fetus.
This man knows what he’s talking about. I an an HPDE instructor and time trial competitor. The cars have gotten terrifyingly fast, and somebody who has spent time learning in a ‘momentum car’ has learned that they’re all momentum cars.
5th Gear: I wonder about mass transit. Covid has changed us in ways we don’t think about.
Same power to weight ratio as my SVT Focus *shrug*
I’ve never understood the “BRZ/86 is too underpowered” argument. It’s too underpowered FOR ME, but it’s not too underpowered for its segment.
You are partially right...The thing is I want a 2 year old German car from the 90's :). One decently depreciated without a zillion miles on it.
This is a terribly disappointing car, honestly.
“If you can’t go fast with 90 horsepower, 900 horsepower won’t help you.”
The Corvette had around 345 so you’re close, but my point still stands.
I am still under the impression that Toyota should have taken the 86 platform, rear seat delete, upped the hardware, and added a small displacement 6 cylinder turbo (like based off the evolution of the 4GR) and call it the 86 Supra. Get back to the days of the old Celica Supra.
One that I enjoy from Sir Jackie is the way you take your foot off the brake is more important than the way you apply the brake. Paraphrased of course.
I’m waiting a few years for my “mid life crisis” car and I’m really eyeing the 86. This new generation really gives me hope that it will still be around in another decade and wont suck. I want to buy it new, optioned to me. Since I’ve never been able to do that ever
I mean the corvette had similar HP but also probably had 2x the torque of the GR86
When I started doing track days in 1990, Corvettes made 245hp. There were more powerful cars, but they weren’t common, so if you wanted more, you had to spend a good amount of money to go get it aftermarket. Typically, this was only after you’d had a few years under your belt, to discover you liked this hobby.
Long ago I took to heart the words of the great Jackie Stewart who said, “good driving, for me, is smooth driving.” The key to making a car go fast, or last a long time, or get good economy, is doing nothing in an upsetting fashion.
if you think any modern car is underpowered you probably need to up your driving skills
