For anything squeaky or stiff, and metal, you are better off using white lithium grease. It will last significantly longer, provide long term lubrication. WD-40's effects can wear off very quickly in comparison.
A silicon-based grease would work better for hinges. It's sold in aetosol as well. WD-40 is more cleaner than grease.
