Yes, exactly this. I’m sure these girls already had their guard up in public spaces. I can’t imagine the terror and guilt (even though it’s 1000% not their fault) they’re going through now. Just reading the quote from one of the girls after the attack is heartbreaking.

Jesus Christ, no. Those men did something brave and heroic that they certainly didn’t have to do. But those little girls have a right to live, just like literally every other human person.

I agree that it’s important to give credit to those who actually stand up to bigotry. Mourning the men who died and donating to their fund, in and of itself, isn’t lessening what happened to the girls.

This story probably wouldn’t have been reported at all if the stabbings didn’t occur. Racists verbally attacking black little girls or girls and women wearing hijab is extremely common.

While I see where you’re coming from, they likely will need counseling, which also costs a lot of money.

This was my concern too. Even though they weren’t physically harmed, those girls were most definitely traumatized and are going to need treatment and support as well. I’ve already seen gross, racist MRA types blaming them, and I’m sure they’ve read some truly terrible comments/messages themselves.

Given that Oregon was literally founded as a racist utopia and that the PNW still has a huge population of white supremacists, I actually think this is pretty self-aware.

I think you’re right in that Bernardo (and probably most predatory men) seek out partners who are, in some way or other, vulnerable to or primed for abuse. Bringing up Wuornos is really interesting to me, because I have, maybe not even rightly, extreme empathy for you.

Gahh thank you for saying this! This thread is so frustrating. It is totally possible for someone to be both a victim of abuse and a predator. That’s the story for a lot of serial killers.

While I get and respect what you’re saying, victims of DV - even the most extreme cases - can still be really shitty people in their own right.

I didn’t think about it like that until now but god, that makes me worry for their kids even more. I get that people deserve redemption, but how can you want to spend the rest of your life (theoretically, at least) with someone after seeing them do something so awful?
