Why buy a $50,000 EV when you can get a $16k Fiesta that gets over 50mpg.. Oh wait, they don’t sell that in the US anymore because I’m one of 12 people who bought one.
So, why buy a $50,000 EV when you can get a $80,000 massive SUV that gets 8mpg?

Whatever it takes to get those poors off the road I’m all for it! The road is overpopulated anyway.
“Fleet economy” is also totally meaningless when SUVs & trucks are exempt (but maybe that’s your point to begin with?).
“An internal combustion engine is a messy, unneccesary complex lump of things, with too many moving parts, and too much stuff to go wrong.”
Also the German one is made of plastic parts that self-destruct halfway through what should be the lifespan of the unit.
I work as a development engineer in the auto industry, I’m well aware of what’s going on. The whole “no ICE vehicles by 2030" thing is a sham, the market won’t even be 25% EV by then. It’s for political points, just like car companies touting their EV development is a ploy to raise stock price.
It’s the only time so called “rich” people care about those disgusting “poor” people - when they can exploit them to argue against doing something that should be done because it’s the right thing to do, and will cost them a little more money.
How, exactly, do automakers make buyers buy cars that they don’t want?
Great, let’s do that. By increasing the difficulty of the driving test so that the least-skilled 33% of drivers fail.
Nope. The footprint rule still exists. The bigger the footprint, the lower the requirements for fuel economy. Seriously.
Ford stock holders would like you to stop typing now.
And while the dealer is trying to make it right for Fredricks, he’s still out of $10,000 and a car.
“though those also probably depend on who wins the presidency in 2024, and whether that person believes that climate change is real or not. It’s a great system.”
Heh....as someone who works in the auto industry as a powertrain engineer, this whole “fleet economy” thing is incredibly dumb. It’s actually difficult to describe how stupid it is to regulate vehicles this way.
The thing looks like it has the automotive equivalent of a prolapsed anus and you want the pics to be clearer? I fear running into one of these things out in the wild, at least until Athena decides to bestow a mirrored shield upon me...
“To be fair, though, we only drove the manual. All the better opinions are tied up with the CVT”
I’m now a father and just bought a 2021 limited after needing a second car to commute in after a move. I’ve previously owned 2002 and 2013 Base WRXs, both would be just as good at hauling around the baby seat as the previous two. Biggest difference, I’m not worried about my wife being uncomfortable in the 2021 like I…
That front end looks better than the ‘22
Locking the premium features behind a CVT penalty has to be the most bonkers decision ever. There is clearly a rationale for that, but I’ll be jiggered if I know what it could be.
1st gear: I can’t speak for the UK, but subsidies are not for the consumer, they’re for the car manufacturer and really any party that is interested in furthering green adoption.
