Then again, if you back the ‘moderate’ candidate and continually shift the scales towards the conservative/regressive side, aren’t you losing even if your candidate wins?

It’s more like you have $3 to bet on either a 4 in 6 chance to win with a $4 payout or you can bet the same $3 on a 1 in 6 chance to win but with a $20 payout. Yes the former bet wins more often but the later makes you more money in the long run.
