I think the bigger delineation is that Subaru releases updates to the WRX and STi at different times, so there are periods where one is on a whole new platform and the other is the old platform.

The STi and the WRX have different engines and drive trains, they are more different as an Eco-boost Mustang and a Mustang GT.
