Man you are trying too hard to discredit the name. SotN is a Castlevania game, it may be the first in the series with this type of gameplay but that was enough for people to later (and yes, later, not at the moment of release) to name the genre metroidvania.

The vania is needed because SotN introduced the rpg like elements to the metroid formula, and no game before had done it.

Gamers this days are really out of touch if they think for a minute there is nothing to play out there between releases. I say slow down the release of new games, my pile of shame grows by the day and I don’t think I’ll ever have enough time to play it all.
