I'm reminded a bit of Gunvalkyrie, an early Xbox game that had some really good action and a similar style and some similar mechanics. I never got too far in it though, owing mostly to a ridiculously convoluted control scheme that made it really tough to play.

Oh, and one other thing: For the games that have it (3, 4 and the PSP version of 2) I'd recommend skipping any DLC until after you've finished the main story. In the second one in particular, there are a couple of (free) DLC characters that can be completely game-breaking.
