This would work, but would require additional effort and kinda cancel out the "at a glance" appeal to it.

I hadn't considered the cost of operation... An old LCD would likely be a bit power inefficient and would likely cost more to operate over the course of a year than buying a calendar.

This is a good use for the r-pi. Not very demanding from a processor perspective and super useful. If you happen to have an old LCD lying around being wasted, it would even be cost effective compared to buying a paper calendar each year

Consoles aren't typically dumbed down. When they are new, they are typically quite competitive to current generation PCs in a similar price bracket.

To be fair, I think the savings in food would more than pay for the additional expense in electricity. I think that the biggest flaw in the plan is the space requirement.
