Technically, if a card is not signed, it is not valid. Putting “check ID” on it does not work. Plus, in California, you can’t ask for any personally identifying information — not even a zip code. Someone showing you their ID, which has your full address on it, can get a retailer in trouble.

You MIGHT be able to get away with it if you only did this to really high ticket meals that were put on a corporate credit card. It is less likely that people doing this check their credit card statements.
