My experience: freshly out of college, I took my first “real” job. Along with the new job, I got a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI. I got it with 80K on it; timing belt interval was 60K; belt appeared original. So I got it done immediately.

Or, if it’s a new car and you have Geico insurance, get Geico’s mechanical breakdown coverage. It’s really inexpensive - on the order of $50 every 6 months - but provides 7 years 100K miles coverage with $250 deductible.

In November my son bought a 2010 Mini Cooper JCW. He and I met the seller, test drove it, and agreed on a price. I carpooled briefly with a guy who got towed everywhere he went. Try counting one one thousand two one thousand for the two second rule? Try “Wuh”. A coworker and I would fight for the back seat, so as not to be the first to the scene of the crash.
